PLUS!!  There was great Live Music from some of the top UK talent from Armstrong Learning and Access To Music.

With jammed roads, train lines down and people stranded overnight, the outlook for the Access to Music and Armstrong Learning Awards Ceremony looked bleak!

But on Wednesday 1st December musicians, students, apprentices, tutors, VIPs, special guests and top DJs battled through the snow to the O2 Academy in Birmingham for the annual awards. Students’ musical talents were recognised in a Brit Award-style ceremony featuring live music and presented by top Radio 1 DJ Edith Bowman.

The awards reflected music industry practice, with music categories, shortlisted nominations and awardees announced on the night. Awards included Best Group which was awarded to Soundtrack to Your Summer, a band from partner college Trafford College, Best Business which went to Pascal Wray, a student from Birmingham and Best Live Act which was awarded to Arianna from Access to Music, Bristol.

Adding colour and live music to the show was a line up of top acts from Access to Music students and Armstrong Learning clients.

London’s Jimi’s Parade opened the show impressing guests with their stomping indie rock. Their passion for music and professionalism on the national Atom Live Tour led them to be selected to play in Paris at the Inter Ecole Festival Rock. Their track, The Lover features on the Atom Sounds 2 CD, coming soon.

Access to Music apprentice, iamRuby (Hannah Kimberley), belted out a powerful soulful pop song which not only won over the audience but also Edith Bowman!

It was hard to believe the Royal Northern College of Music Session Band were put together especially for the night. With their professional, passionate and soulful performance of Stevie Wonder’s Living for the City it sounded like they had been performing together forever and the audience were left wanting more.

Just one man and his guitar, Irish singer-songwriter Aaron Shanley, filled every inch of the venue with his startling alt-folk ballad. With BBC radio play and rave reviews for his debut album Let the Sun In, it was great to have him at the event.

London based hip-hop artist, Brainlokk, provided a dramatic contrast and was joined on stage by vocalist Hannah K to perform the catchy track The Inside. Brainlokk has developed his music over the past eight years, recently including a more poppy twist which the audience loved!

With a fantastic black and white costume of enormous flares and jaunty hat, Arianna and her band The Fourth Phase immediately captured the audience’s imagination and ears. The talented Bristol-based singer-songwriter is currently in talks with a record company - watch this space!

And as if that wasn’t enough, when the ceremony came to a close, guests were treated to a glittering after-show party of food, drinks and more music featuring up and coming French Band, Slide on Venus, and BBC 1 Xtra’s DJ Bailey.

A massive congratulations to all nominees and awardees and a huge thanks to all those involved in making the night the tremendous success! Until next year, keep working hard and making first-class music - it could be you up there collecting an award next time!

JIMI’S PARADE
Jimi’s Parade play indie/rock which is raw yet melodic and fused by honesty and
realism. Summer 2010 saw Jimi’s Parade undertake their first UK tour finishing
at the Great Escape Festival in Brighton. They have just returned from a headline
sell-out show at Le Gibus in Paris and a European tour is set follow at Easter
followed by the festival circuit in 2011.

iamRUBY
An uplifting fusion of intimate lyrics and epic sounds form the foundations of
iamRuby’s soulful pop-tronica. ‘I’m influenced by so many different songs and genres
that I just try to merge my favourite aspects of these styles to produce
something fresh and rousing’. iamRuby is now in the studio recording her first EP
The Wish Bone Tree which will be released on Big Dice Records in 2011.

RNCM SESSION BAND
The band performing at tonight’s Awards Ceremony have been brought
together especially for the event. They are a combination of first and second
year students on the RNCM foundation degree and include award-winner, Brad
Edmondson, on guitar.

I have been within the music industry for 8 years ,building and developin my talents and career.I started of on a
pirate radio station Ontop Fm 95.5 practicing my vocals in order to develop my career further.I then put out 2 promo
cds could "58 in the mind 21 in the flesh" and "Brainwave" respectively. This generated a buzz, selling 2,000 units
to date between them and is still selling.I then began formal education doing a vocal artist level 2 and 3 Diploma
course at the Greenwich Colleges Merdian Music Centre so I could build upon my theoretical knowledge of music.
Now in my final year I have ambitions to study for a Degree in Commercial Music Performance at university.

Following an extensive tour of the USA and constant gigging all over his native Ireland, Aaron Shanley
makes his UK debut this autumn with his first mini album ‘Let The Sun In’
supported by his first set of live dates in England. Showcasing a range of different genre influences, Aaron fuses
the epic musical beauty of alternative rock bands like Goo Goo Dolls and Jimmy Eat World with the catchy folk-pop
hooks of contemporary singer-songwriters like Alan Pownall and Jay Jay Pistolet.  The 20-year-old musician has
already won the heart of BBC 6Music’s Tom Robinson, and earlier this year was awarded the prestigious
Katherine Brick Award for Young Songwriter of the Year via the international Belfast Nashville Songwriters’ Festival.
Aaron’s debut album ‘Let The Sun In’ is released through his own label Love Gum Records
(www.lovegum.greedbag.com) on October 25th.

ARIANNA
Arianna is a singer-songwriter from the South West. She plays with a four piece
band, fusing together roots, blues and rock.
